Sherwood
Sherwood Forest is a 17 pound dachshund/Jack Russell mix and he is the official mascot and soap apprentice of Californica. The world's only "Mountain Dachshund", his unique blend of breeds makes him both an ideal adventure dog and nighttime snuggle buddy. He enjoys observing nature, hiking, playing with his ball and watching his mom work. Countless hours of Sherwood napping nearby went into the production of Californica's products and he genuinely hopes that you appreciate his effort!
Katy
Katy has taken her many varied experiences and interests and formed them into one passion: the art of soapmaking. Katy studied Environmental Horticulture at UC Davis, and brings her knowledge of plants to selecting essential oils and ingredients that best represent the diverse ecosystems of Northern California. Half scientist, half artist, Katy loves to create and learn how things are made from scratch. Katy has extensively researched to best formulate her recipes and she hopes that those enjoying her products love them as much as she does making them! She would like to thank all of her family and friends for being testers of new recipes, and in particular her mom, for being a sounding board for all of her crazy ideas.
Californica consists of a team of three: Katy, her mom, Natalie and her little dog, Sherwood. Our name is derived from the species name of plants and animals that are native to California, such as Eschscholzia californica, the California Golden Poppy and the state's official flower.
Natalie
Natalie is Katy’s mom and Sherwood’s grandma. After studying Forestry at UC Berkeley and working for the Forest Service, she became an elementary school teacher for twenty-three years before retiring in June 2017. On her first day of retirement, she was found at the Nevada City Farmers Market for Californica’s first ever market. Like her daughter and grand dog, she is happiest outside in the sun. Unlike her daughter, she is a very adept gardener and has a Sunset Magazine quality yard to show for her efforts. The most “morning person” you’ll ever meet, Natalie has taken up soap and product making with the same energy and drive that she applies to all aspects of her life. She is also a big fan of the San Francisco Giants and the Golden State Warriors and enjoys watching the games daily with her husband, Mike.
